Prescribing overview
Zorbium is staff-applied feline transdermal buprenorphine, not interchangeable with injections or transmucosal preparations.
Key prescribing checks
- The U.S. label says not to dispense Zorbium for administration at home by an owner. Staff application requires the specified protective equipment and exposure precautions.
- Serious human exposure and abuse risks are described in the boxed warning. Review handling, contact precautions and controlled-substance security.
- Assess opioid intolerance, respiratory status and concurrent sedatives or anesthetic drugs. Opioid effects may persist beyond the procedure.
- Client discharge instructions should include product-specific contact restrictions and signs that require clinical attention rather than generic topical-medication advice.
Uses by species
Approval and evidence apply to the named product, species, route and indication. An extra-label use requires its own prescribing assessment; a human indication is not an animal approval.

Mechanism and clinical role
High-affinity opioid-receptor binding produces analgesia; effects do not directly track plasma concentration.
Absorption, distribution, metabolism and elimination
Feline skin depot sustains systemic delivery; mean peak 7.33 hours and absorption-limited terminal half-life 64.9 hours.

Contraindications & cautions
Contraindications identify circumstances where the source says a product should not be used. Precautions call for assessment or monitoring. Interactions identify combinations to review. They are distinct categories; this summary does not replace a full interaction check or the current product label.
Zorbium
US staff-applied feline transdermal label.
Contraindications · when not to use
- Buprenorphine hydrochloride/inactive-ingredient hypersensitivity or known opioid intolerance.
Precautions & monitoring
- Do not apply to diseased/injured skin. Only veterinary personnel may administer; do not dispense for owner application. Serious human exposure risk. Safety unstudied in debilitated cats, renal/hepatic/cardiac/respiratory disease, breeding/pregnancy/lactation, under four months or outside labeled weight range. Monitor postoperative temperature.
Safety sources checked: . Selected label information; independent veterinary or veterinary-pharmacy review remains pending. A label for dogs, cats, horses or humans does not establish safety for another species.
Adverse effects
Monitor opioid-related behavioral changes, sedation, respiratory effects and postoperative hyperthermia.
These are selected source-reported effects, not incidence estimates or an exhaustive list. Spontaneous postmarketing reports do not by themselves establish frequency or causality.

Drug & supplement interactions
This is a selected interaction reference, not an automated or comprehensive combination checker. Reconcile prescription drugs, nonprescription products, supplements and recent treatment changes.
A product-specific interaction summary has not been established here. An empty list must not be interpreted as “no interactions.” Review the full source and a species-appropriate clinical reference.
Monitoring
Assess pain, temperature, respiration and recovery; provide rescue analgesia when needed.
Client counseling
Follow discharge contact restrictions; human exposure can cause fatal respiratory depression.
This section supports the veterinary team's discharge discussion; it does not replace the product’s Client Information Sheet where one is required.
Storage & handling
Staff use nitrile/latex gloves, protective glasses and lab coat; allow ≥30 minutes drying before site contact. Secure controlled substance.

Zorbium is a specific skin-applied formulation. Oral-mucosal or injectable buprenorphine products are not interchangeable instructions for this preparation.
Retain the route, formulation and full product name in clinical documentation. A match to buprenorphine alone is insufficient to select a route or volume.
Shared ingredients do not establish interchangeable concentrations, routes, release properties, species labeling or regional availability.
