Prescribing overview
Clomicalm complements behavior modification for canine separation anxiety; it is not simply a sedative.
Key prescribing checks
- The label excludes dogs with a seizure history or concurrent drugs that lower the seizure threshold. Obtain a meaningful neurologic and medication history before treatment.
- Do not combine with monoamine oxidase inhibitors or cross the label’s required separation interval. A prescriber should manage medication transitions rather than treating antidepressants as interchangeable.
- The label excludes male breeding dogs and does not recommend use for aggression. Monitor clinical behavior, tolerance and the behavior-modification plan; lack of response needs diagnostic reassessment rather than simply adding sedating medicines.
Uses by species
Approval and evidence apply to the named product, species, route and indication. An extra-label use requires its own prescribing assessment; a human indication is not an animal approval.
Dogs older than 6 months
FDA-approved veterinary labelSeparation anxiety
Use within comprehensive behavioral management, not as treatment for aggression.
Use / indication source ↗Pharmacology & pharmacokinetics
Mechanism and clinical role
Modifies serotonergic and noradrenergic transmission; serotonin reuptake inhibition is the proposed principal action.
Absorption, distribution, metabolism and elimination
Dogs absorb oral clomipramine rapidly. Food increases exposure; metabolism is primarily hepatic.

Contraindications & cautions
Contraindications identify circumstances where the source says a product should not be used. Precautions call for assessment or monitoring. Interactions identify combinations to review. They are distinct categories; this summary does not replace a full interaction check or the current product label.
Clomicalm
U.S. canine oral tablets.
Contraindications · when not to use
- Hypersensitivity to clomipramine or related tricyclic antidepressants; male breeding dogs; seizure history or concurrent seizure-threshold-lowering drugs; concurrent MAO inhibitors or use within 14 days before or after them.
Precautions & monitoring
- Not recommended for aggression. Safety below six months, in pregnant/lactating dogs and with long-term use is not established; reassess behavior diagnosis and laboratory monitoring.
Safety sources checked: . Selected label information; independent veterinary or veterinary-pharmacy review remains pending. A label for dogs, cats, horses or humans does not establish safety for another species.
Adverse effects
Lethargy and vomiting can occur.
These are selected source-reported effects, not incidence estimates or an exhaustive list. Spontaneous postmarketing reports do not by themselves establish frequency or causality.

- Review phenobarbital, cimetidine, fluoxetine, anticholinergics, sympathomimetics and other CNS-active drugs; label interaction guidance is extrapolated from human data. General-anesthetic planning requires prescriber review.
Monitoring
Track behavior, tolerance and clinical status throughout treatment and tapering.
Client counseling
Continue the individualized training plan; punishment is inappropriate for separation anxiety.
This section supports the veterinary team's discharge discussion; it does not replace the product’s Client Information Sheet where one is required.
Storage & handling
Keep dry at 15–25°C in the original closed container.

Clomicalm tablets contain clomipramine hydrochloride. Keep this drug separate from fluoxetine or trazodone even when they appear in the same behavior-medication discussion.
