Enalapril

An angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitor identified by the brands Vasotec and historical canine Enacard. Clinical use requires a patient-specific assessment of cardiovascular status, renal function and other medications.

For veterinarians and veterinary staff. Product-label information is distinct from extra-label clinical practice. This is not a complete prescribing formulary or an automated interaction screen. Verify the current label, exact formulation, patient and species-specific clinical reference before use. Independent veterinary/pharmacy review remains pending.

Prescribing overview

Current Vasotec information is human labeling. Historical Enacard identity does not verify a currently approved U.S. canine product.

Key prescribing checks

  • Review hydration, blood pressure, creatinine and potassium when considering therapy or follow-up. Excessive blood-pressure reduction and renal effects require clinical assessment.
  • Check potassium supplements, potassium-sparing drugs, diuretics and NSAIDs during reconciliation; these can alter the safety of ACE-inhibitor therapy.
  • The human label includes fetal-toxicity warnings. Reproductive status and animal-specific references must be reviewed rather than assuming cross-species safety.

Uses by species

Approval and evidence apply to the named product, species, route and indication. An extra-label use requires its own prescribing assessment; a human indication is not an animal approval.

Pharmacology & pharmacokinetics

Mechanism and clinical role

Enalapril's active metabolite enalaprilat inhibits ACE, reducing angiotensin II formation.

Absorption, distribution, metabolism and elimination

The human label describes conversion to enalaprilat and renal elimination; no animal half-life is inferred.

Contraindications & cautions

Contraindications identify circumstances where the source says a product should not be used. Precautions call for assessment or monitoring. Interactions identify combinations to review. They are distinct categories; this summary does not replace a full interaction check or the current product label.

Enacard

Historical U.S. canine tablets; no current brand safety label verified.

Contraindications · when not to use

A formal contraindication list is not established in the reviewed source for this scope. This does not establish safety; confirm the exact product and full labeling.

Precautions & monitoring

  • Needs current label safety review before any product-specific decision.

Vasotec

Human enalapril tablets; these restrictions do not establish animal contraindications.

Contraindications · when not to use

  • Product hypersensitivity; prior ACE-inhibitor-related, hereditary or idiopathic angioedema; aliskiren in diabetic patients; neprilysin inhibitors, including the required 36-hour separation from sacubitril/valsartan.

Precautions & monitoring

  • Fetal toxicity warning; assess pregnancy, hypotension/volume depletion, renal function and potassium.

Enacard coverage remains explicitly unresolved for product-specific safety; do not apply the human Vasotec label as a canine Enacard label.

Safety sources checked: . Selected label information; independent veterinary or veterinary-pharmacy review remains pending. A label for dogs, cats, horses or humans does not establish safety for another species.

Adverse effects

Human warnings include hypotension, hyperkalemia, renal dysfunction and angioedema; these are not animal incidence estimates.

These are selected source-reported effects, not incidence estimates or an exhaustive list. Spontaneous postmarketing reports do not by themselves establish frequency or causality.

Dosing & administration

Verify the source before prescribing. The regimens below summarize selected veterinary product labels, not every accepted veterinary use. They are not automatic substitutions between brands or formulations. Renal/hepatic disease, concurrent therapy, age, indication and clinical response can require a different plan.

A verified veterinary dose has not been entered for this product. Human-label dosing must not be used as an animal regimen. Consult a current species-specific clinical source and the prescribing veterinarian.

Current approved veterinary dose not verified; historical Enacard regimens and human doses intentionally omitted.

Extra-label prescribing and food-animal residue requirements are separate from labeled regimens. FDA extra-label-use guidance ↗

Drug & supplement interactions

This is a selected interaction reference, not an automated or comprehensive combination checker. Reconcile prescription drugs, nonprescription products, supplements and recent treatment changes.

Vasotec

Human enalapril tablets; these restrictions do not establish animal contraindications.

  • Review potassium supplements/sparing diuretics, other renin-angiotensin-system inhibitors, diuretics, NSAIDs, lithium and mTOR inhibitors.

Monitoring

Veterinary prescriber should assess blood pressure, renal function, potassium and concurrent drugs.

Client counseling

Do not replace a veterinary prescription with human package directions; report collapse or marked weakness.

This section supports the veterinary team's discharge discussion; it does not replace the product’s Client Information Sheet where one is required.

Storage & handling

Follow the exact dispensed product's instructions.

Brands, formulations & ingredient identity

Active ingredients

enalapril maleate

Enacard remains a useful historical brand synonym. FDA’s June 2024 Green Book update records withdrawal of its approval because it was no longer manufactured or marketed; do not present it as a currently available U.S. veterinary brand.

Vasotec is a human tablet product. The shared enalapril maleate ingredient does not make its human instructions a canine prescription.

Enalaprilat is the active metabolite and also exists as a separately labeled injectable drug. It is not a dispensing synonym for oral enalapril.

Shared ingredients do not establish interchangeable concentrations, routes, release properties, species labeling or regional availability.
