Fenbendazole

A benzimidazole anthelmintic supplied under Panacur in several species-specific formulations. Parasite claims depend on the formulation and labeled species; one product name does not establish coverage for every intestinal parasite.

For veterinarians and veterinary staff. Product-label information is distinct from extra-label clinical practice. This is not a complete prescribing formulary or an automated interaction screen. Verify the current label, exact formulation, patient and species-specific clinical reference before use. Independent veterinary/pharmacy review remains pending.

Prescribing overview

Panacur formulations have species- and parasite-specific claims; concentrations and regimens are not interchangeable.

Key prescribing checks

  • Match the suspected or documented parasite to the product’s label claims and diagnostic findings. A generic dewormer category is not enough to determine suitability.
  • The granule label requires complete consumption of medicated food for effectiveness. Record whether the patient actually received the intended prescription.
  • For food-producing species, verify the applicable label, production class and withdrawal requirements before use; a canine instruction cannot supply livestock residue guidance.

Uses by species

Approval and evidence apply to the named product, species, route and indication. An extra-label use requires its own prescribing assessment; a human indication is not an animal approval.

Pharmacology & pharmacokinetics

Mechanism and clinical role

Label attributes antiparasitic action to interference with parasite energy metabolism.

Absorption, distribution, metabolism and elimination

Reviewed labels do not provide numerical species-specific absorption/elimination parameters.

Contraindications & cautions

Contraindications identify circumstances where the source says a product should not be used. Precautions call for assessment or monitoring. Interactions identify combinations to review. They are distinct categories; this summary does not replace a full interaction check or the current product label.

Panacur

U.S. granules 22.2% for dogs and only the named carnivorous/omnivorous zoo animals.

Contraindications · when not to use

  • The canine section explicitly reports no known contraindications; do not generalize that statement to other species or formulations.

Precautions & monitoring

  • Full consumption of medicated food is essential. For listed zoo animals, the label prohibits use during the hunting season or the preceding 14 days.

Panacur Paste

U.S. equine paste 10%.

Contraindications · when not to use

  • Food-safety prohibition: do not use in horses intended for human consumption.

Precautions & monitoring

  • Dying parasites may release antigens and cause local/systemic hypersensitivity, especially with higher exposure. The repeated regimen for fourth-stage Strongylus vulgaris larvae has not been evaluated for reproductive safety in pregnant mares or stallions. Monitor parasite-treatment effectiveness and resistance.

Panacur Suspension

U.S. horse/cattle oral suspension 10%; production-class restrictions differ from granules/paste.

Contraindications · when not to use

  • Do not use in horses intended for human consumption, beef calves under two months, dairy calves or veal calves. The higher beef-cattle-only regimen is prohibited in dairy cattle.

Precautions & monitoring

  • Observe milk-discard and cattle slaughter-withdrawal requirements in the full label. No withdrawal period is established for pre-ruminating calves. Ensure complete administration based on current weight; monitor effectiveness and resistance.

Paste and suspension labels lack separate formal contraindication sections; explicit food-safety/production-class prohibitions are identified above. Their absence does not mean no contraindications exist.

Safety sources checked: . Selected label information; independent veterinary or veterinary-pharmacy review remains pending. A label for dogs, cats, horses or humans does not establish safety for another species.

Adverse effects

Vomiting was reported in canine studies; killing equine parasites can provoke hypersensitivity reactions.

These are selected source-reported effects, not incidence estimates or an exhaustive list. Spontaneous postmarketing reports do not by themselves establish frequency or causality.

Dosing & administration

Verify the source before prescribing. The regimens below summarize selected veterinary product labels, not every accepted veterinary use. They are not automatic substitutions between brands or formulations. Renal/hepatic disease, concurrent therapy, age, indication and clinical response can require a different plan.

Client counseling

Weigh accurately and complete prescribed treatment; persistent tapeworm segments need reassessment.

Storage & handling

Granules: 20–25°C. Paste/suspension: ≤25°C; protect suspension from freezing.

Brands, formulations & ingredient identity

Active ingredients

Fenbendazole

Panacur granules, paste and suspension share fenbendazole but differ in concentration, administration and labeled species. Verify the exact container rather than substituting by brand alone.

The cited granule label includes dogs and selected zoo animals; the equine paste and horse/cattle suspension have their own labels.

Identification of fenbendazole does not prove approval for every exotic animal or every parasite. Extra-label use requires a veterinarian’s species-specific decision.

Shared ingredients do not establish interchangeable concentrations, routes, release properties, species labeling or regional availability.
