Prescribing overview
Flagyl capsules are human-labeled antimicrobials, not a general treatment for all diarrhea.
Key prescribing checks
- Use antimicrobial stewardship: establish the suspected target organism and clinical rationale rather than prescribing from a symptom name alone.
- Review hepatic dysfunction, neurologic history and concurrent medication. The human label describes encephalopathy, seizures and peripheral neuropathy; new abnormal coordination warrants assessment.
- Check interactions including anticoagulants and relevant anticonvulsants. Animal-specific selection and monitoring must come from the veterinarian rather than human label dosage instructions.
Uses by species
Approval and evidence apply to the named product, species, route and indication. An extra-label use requires its own prescribing assessment; a human indication is not an animal approval.
Veterinary patients
Not established by reviewed human labelA veterinary infectious diagnosis and formulation-specific prescription are required.
Animal use requires a veterinarian's separate diagnosis and prescription.

Mechanism and clinical role
Active against susceptible anaerobes; antimicrobial activity involves damage to microbial DNA.
Absorption, distribution, metabolism and elimination
The human label does not establish species-specific veterinary clearance.

Contraindications & cautions
Contraindications identify circumstances where the source says a product should not be used. Precautions call for assessment or monitoring. Interactions identify combinations to review. They are distinct categories; this summary does not replace a full interaction check or the current product label.

Human label; this does not establish veterinary approval or an animal treatment protocol.
Human condition-specific restrictions are not evidence of corresponding veterinary approval or contraindications.
Safety sources checked: . Selected label information; independent veterinary or veterinary-pharmacy review remains pending. A label for dogs, cats, horses or humans does not establish safety for another species.
Adverse effects
Neurologic toxicity, serious skin reactions and blood-cell abnormalities are described in human labeling.
These are selected source-reported effects, not incidence estimates or an exhaustive list. Spontaneous postmarketing reports do not by themselves establish frequency or causality.
Dosing & administration
A verified veterinary dose has not been entered for this product. Human-label dosing must not be used as an animal regimen. Consult a current species-specific clinical source and the prescribing veterinarian.
A veterinary dose was not verified from an approved animal label; human dosing is not an animal regimen.
Extra-label prescribing and food-animal residue requirements are separate from labeled regimens. FDA extra-label-use guidance ↗
Drug & supplement interactions
This is a selected interaction reference, not an automated or comprehensive combination checker. Reconcile prescription drugs, nonprescription products, supplements and recent treatment changes.

Review liver disease, neurologic changes and anticoagulant/anticonvulsant interactions.
Client counseling
Report abnormal gait, tremors, seizures or marked illness promptly; do not extend treatment independently.
This section supports the veterinary team's discharge discussion; it does not replace the product’s Client Information Sheet where one is required.
Storage & handling
Follow capsule-package storage directions; verify compounded preparations separately.
Brands, formulations & ingredient identity
Active ingredients
metronidazole
Flagyl is a metronidazole brand. It is not a general synonym for a diarrhea remedy, and the ingredient name does not establish why a particular animal should receive it.
The linked current brand label describes oral capsules. Other tablets, liquids or compounded preparations require their own concentration and dosage-form verification.
Do not treat a topical product, a compounded salt preparation and an oral capsule as equivalent merely because their names include metronidazole.
Shared ingredients do not establish interchangeable concentrations, routes, release properties, species labeling or regional availability.
