Prescribing overview
Apoquel controls allergic itch and atopic dermatitis, without eliminating the allergy trigger.
Key prescribing checks
- Do not use in dogs under 12 months of age, dogs with serious infections, or breeding, pregnant or lactating dogs. Verify these exclusions before dispensing.
- Screen for recurring infections, parasitic skin disease and neoplasia. The label warns that infections and existing cancers may worsen; symptom relief does not remove those concerns.
- Assess concurrent corticosteroid or cyclosporine use against the full prescribing information. Monitor clinical response and adverse effects, including gastrointestinal signs, as part of a continuing dermatology plan.
Uses by species
Approval and evidence apply to the named product, species, route and indication. An extra-label use requires its own prescribing assessment; a human indication is not an animal approval.
Dogs

Contraindications & cautions
Contraindications identify circumstances where the source says a product should not be used. Precautions call for assessment or monitoring. Interactions identify combinations to review. They are distinct categories; this summary does not replace a full interaction check or the current product label.
Apoquel / Apoquel Chewable
Dogs; coated tablets and chewable tablets share these safety exclusions.
Contraindications · when not to use
A formal contraindication list is not established in the reviewed source for this scope. This does not establish safety; confirm the exact product and full labeling.
Precautions & monitoring
- Explicit label exclusions: dogs under 12 months, serious infection, breeding, pregnancy or lactation. Monitor infection, demodicosis and neoplasia; pre-existing cancer or recurrent infection requires a risk-benefit review.
These explicit exclusions are in warnings/precautions rather than a formal contraindications section.
Safety sources checked: . Selected label information; independent veterinary or veterinary-pharmacy review remains pending. A label for dogs, cats, horses or humans does not establish safety for another species.
Adverse effects
Vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, infection and neoplasia have been reported.
These are selected source-reported effects, not incidence estimates or an exhaustive list. Spontaneous postmarketing reports do not by themselves establish frequency or causality.

Active ingredients
Oclacitinib
Other searchable names: Oclacitinib maleate
Apoquel and Apoquel Chewable identify oclacitinib products. Record the actual presentation and strength rather than treating the chewable description as a new active ingredient.
Apoquel is an oral small-molecule medicine. Cytopoint is a different injectable antibody therapy and is not a generic or brand synonym for oclacitinib.
Shared ingredients do not establish interchangeable concentrations, routes, release properties, species labeling or regional availability.
