For veterinarians and veterinary staff. Product-label information is distinct from extra-label clinical practice. This is not a complete prescribing formulary or an automated interaction screen. Verify the current label, exact formulation, patient and species-specific clinical reference before use. Independent veterinary/pharmacy review remains pending.

Prescribing overview

Canine Drontal Plus covers more nematodes than feline two-ingredient Drontal.

Key prescribing checks

  • The U.S. label says not to use in pregnant animals. Pregnancy screening is therefore important even when deworming appears routine.
  • Confirm age, weight and appropriate tablet size against the current label. A feline product should not be substituted using a canine weight table.
  • Parasite identification, flea control, fecal disposal and follow-up determine the larger plan. A single treatment does not eliminate ongoing environmental exposure.
  • Vomiting and altered stools have been observed in studies; record intolerance and notify the prescriber.

Uses by species

Approval and evidence apply to the named product, species, route and indication. An extra-label use requires its own prescribing assessment; a human indication is not an animal approval.

Dogs

FDA-approved

Label-listed tapeworms, hookworms, ascarids and whipworms

Not pregnant; age ≥3 weeks and weight ≥2 lb.

Pharmacology & pharmacokinetics

Mechanism and clinical role

Praziquantel targets cestodes; pyrantel causes nematode paralysis; febantel disrupts parasite energy metabolism.

Absorption, distribution, metabolism and elimination

The canine label describes praziquantel absorption, hepatic metabolism and biliary excretion, and rapid febantel absorption/metabolism; numerical parameters are not provided.

Contraindications & cautions

Contraindications identify circumstances where the source says a product should not be used. Precautions call for assessment or monitoring. Interactions identify combinations to review. They are distinct categories; this summary does not replace a full interaction check or the current product label.

Drontal Plus Taste Tabs / Drontal Plus

Dogs; chewable Taste Tabs and conventional tablets share these exclusions.

Contraindications · when not to use

  • Pregnancy.

Precautions & monitoring

  • Label excludes puppies below 3 weeks or dogs below 2 pounds. Suspected Echinococcus infection requires strict hygiene and feces handling precautions.

Safety sources checked: . Selected label information; independent veterinary or veterinary-pharmacy review remains pending. A label for dogs, cats, horses or humans does not establish safety for another species.

Adverse effects

Vomiting and nonformed stools are reported; pregnancy is excluded.

These are selected source-reported effects, not incidence estimates or an exhaustive list. Spontaneous postmarketing reports do not by themselves establish frequency or causality.

Dosing & administration

Verify the source before prescribing. The regimens below summarize selected veterinary product labels, not every accepted veterinary use. They are not automatic substitutions between brands or formulations. Renal/hepatic disease, concurrent therapy, age, indication and clinical response can require a different plan.

A verified veterinary dose has not been entered for this product. Human-label dosing must not be used as an animal regimen. Consult a current species-specific clinical source and the prescribing veterinarian.

Use the official product-specific weight/strength table for a single oral treatment; three tablet sizes prevent safe condensation to one tablet-per-weight rule.

E. multilocularis control may require a veterinarian-directed 21–26-day program. No fasting is required.

Extra-label prescribing and food-animal residue requirements are separate from labeled regimens. FDA extra-label-use guidance ↗

Drug & supplement interactions

This is a selected interaction reference, not an automated or comprehensive combination checker. Reconcile prescription drugs, nonprescription products, supplements and recent treatment changes.

A product-specific interaction summary has not been established here. An empty list must not be interpreted as “no interactions.” Review the full source and a species-appropriate clinical reference.

Monitoring

Confirm parasites and weight; assess ongoing exposure.

Client counseling

Echinococcus warrants strict veterinary-directed fecal hygiene. Control fleas to limit Dipylidium reinfection.

This section supports the veterinary team's discharge discussion; it does not replace the product’s Client Information Sheet where one is required.

Storage & handling

Keep out of children's and animals' reach; follow package conditions.

Brands, formulations & ingredient identity

Active ingredients

praziquantel · pyrantel pamoate · febantel

Other searchable names: praziquantel pyrantel pamoate febantel

Drontal Plus is not a brand synonym for the two-ingredient Drontal feline tablet. Febantel must remain visible in the medication record.

Taste Tabs is the chewable formulation name. The product has different tablet sizes for different dog weight ranges; matching the name alone is insufficient.

Pyrantel strength can be expressed as base supplied by pyrantel pamoate. Confirm how each product states its ingredient amounts before comparing formulations.

Shared ingredients do not establish interchangeable concentrations, routes, release properties, species labeling or regional availability.
